The Scia Engineer User Contest

The 7th bi-annual Nemetschek Engineering User Contest is aimed at all engineering and design firms working with software from the Nemetschek Engineering Group. This includes Scia Engineer, the 3D finite element, structural analysis software - marketed and supported by CADS in the UK.

The contest features five design categories − from buildings to public construction, industrial and plant construction, industrial design and special projects. Both structural analysis and CAD applications are represented. An independent, international jury with nine engineering specialists from industry, research and education evaluated the submitted projects by originality, complexity and technical level. Underlining its comprehensive support of multiple languages and building codes, including the latest Eurocodes, a total of 117 high-quality projects from 91 offices in 19 countries were submitted. Many also exhibited the potential of BIM (Building Information Modelling) and the innovation in design and processes it can deliver.

The UK was well represented with submissions from Thomasons, AECOM, and Melliss LLP, as well as other UK projects produced by European firms for plant and an offshore wind farm. This year saw a Thomasons project, St Mary of the Angels Primary School, nominated for an award in the popular Building category. There was also an insight into the design of stadia for the FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018, with an AECOM project for the Spartak Moscow Stadium.  Extreme snow, wind and ice were all major design considerations (see panel). You can learn more about all of these projects in the 'User Contest Book'. The 'User Contest Book' presents all 117 submitted projects. The book's 250 pages give the reader a detailed look at the structures and a unique insight into global structural and civil projects from the designer's perspective. As well as an e-book a hard cover book is available in the UK through CADS.

CADS can offer dynamic links from Scia Engineer to their world class CADS RC design and detailing software; this includes an automated slab detailing link.  CADS continue the BIM theme with their support for Revit Structure.  Scia Engineer and Revit Structure together offer the potential for 'round trip' modelling of structures, as evidenced by the Spartak Moscow stadium project.  CADS invites readers to experience the User Contest projects and discuss how they can benefit from the Scia Engineer software in their businesses. Demonstrations and consultations will be running over the coming months for any interested in understanding more about this powerful design and analysis software suite.
