ALEC won a $245 million contract to build the Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort & Spa in Liwa, Abu Dhabi, a signature destination in Abu Dhabi's expanding and rapidly diversified tourism offering.
Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort & Spa is built seven kilometres from the main Hamim Highway which crosses the Rub Al-Khali, an area made famous in the West through the work of desert adventurer Wilfred Thesiger, who crossed the desert expanse in the 1940's. Despite its remote location it's just 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport! The resort features a five-star hotel with 150 rooms and 50 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom villas, a luxury spa, conference centre, adjoining tented villages, and an observatory from where guests can monitor the awe-inspiring Liwa night skies.
Construction of the 53,000m2 Qasr Al Sarab commenced in May 2008 and is scheduled for completion within two years. South Africa's Northpoint (Pty) Ltd, the name behind the Green Valley Golf and Marina Resort in Mauritius and Portugal's Lisbon Centre, designed Qasr Al Sarab's concept architecture. International consultancy Turner & Townsend has been appointed project manager.
