SMART Modeller User Contest 2007

 1 Aug 2007

Last month the winners of the SCIA User Contest 2007 were announced and the User Contest book is now available in printed form.  The contest featured projects achieved with various SCIA software including SMART Modeller ESA PT and EPW (as it is known in the UK).  Pictured opposite is Graham Bedford of Reuby & Stagg, who received his complimentary copies of the book after submitting two projects for the contest.  Whilst his projects were not eventual winners they have gone on to feature in the global advertising and promotion of SMART Modeller ESA PT.

As well as being a great opportunity to see the diverse projects completed using SMART Modeller ESA PT and EPW, the contest provided an opportunity to guage current engineering design trends.

These included:

  • Design is 3D: it supports the designer's creativity and provides the precision required for complex projects. Supporting items include, drawings, images and bills of materials
  • Engineering design is not just about assuring structural stability; engineers also address execution and the maintenance requirements
  • Light-weight structures (be it bridges, roofs, buildings) are thoroughly checked for large displacements and dynamic behaviour
  • Curves are hot! Rigid lines no longer characterise bridges, roofs and buildings. Calatrava has many disciples ...
  • Soil-structure interaction is modelled for many structures
  • The first proofs of concept for parametric modelling and roundtrip-engineering have been reported, and the resulting efficiency gains
