About Eurocodes

Structural Eurocodes are the pan-European set of structural codes for designing and building and for civil engineering works which will come into force in 2010, replacing British Standards.

The primary objective of Eurocodes is to improve the competitiveness of the European construction industry and the professionals and industries connected with it, outside the European Union. They are innovative, of high technical quality and contain the latest recorded data encompassing expertise from all European countries. After a period of co-existence, they will become mandatory, replacing the codes published by National Standards bodies such as BSI.

Larnaca

As with other European standards, Eurocodes will be used in public procurement specifications and to assess products for CE marking. Eurocodes comprise 57 design standards covering key areas:

  • The basis of structural design
  • Actions
  • Steel
  • Concrete
  • Composite Steel and Concrete
  • Timber (includes Timber Framing)
  • Masonry
  • Aluminium
  • Specialist Glass
  • Geotechnical and Seismic Design

CADS and Eurocodes

CADS employ a team of over one hundred engineers and software developers who support the ongoing development of new features and the implementation of structural codes. An example of our work to date is CADS RC, which already supports British, North American, Indian and
South African detailing codes.

CADS have several parallel developments underway that will enable design to Eurocodes in our range of modelling, analysis, design and detailing products. Further information on availability dates for Eurocode compliant products will be made available closer to their release, but we have already made significant progress.

SCIA Engineer

Scia Engineer

Scia Engineer is a 3D modelling solution for the analysis and design of steel, timber and reinforced concrete buildings, slabs, rafts and other elements thereof. Based on a powerful Finite Elements engine and with a real European pedigree, Scia Engineer already supports several Eurocode annexes , making it ideal for consultancies looking to take full advantage of European project opportunities.

Scia Engineer Supports Most of the Eurocodes Such as:

  • EC0 combinations
  • EC1 loads
  • EC2 reinforced and pre-stressed concrete
  • EC3 steel
  • EC4 mixed steel concrete
  • EC5 wood
  • EC8 dynamics
  • EC9 aluminium

Starting from Scia Engineer version 2008.0 it is possible for the user to work with National Annexes. This will be of great importance because starting from 2010 old national codes will no longer be applicable in Europe.

The primary objectives of the Eurocodes are to improve structural safety and to enhance the competitiveness of the European construction industry - and the professionals and industries connected with it, both within and outside the European Union.

The Eurocodes are mandatory for European public works and are set to become the de-facto standard for the private sector - both in Europe and world-wide.

FREE Eurocodes Paper

Many myths and emotions have appeared around the Structural Eurocodes. In this study, CADS software partner Scia took a closer look at the issue. and surveyed 456 Eurpoean engineers, who accessed the Scia website between December 2006 and February 2007. The result is an in-depth view on Eurocodes and their positioning within an international context.
