Masonry Wall Panel Designers - What's New

 6 Jun 2006
Following the publication of BS 5628-1:2005, CADS Masonry Wall Panel Designer has been upgraded to cater for the changes to clause 19 and table 2 which deal with the characteristic compressive strength of masonry. A Design code option has been introduced so that existing wall panel designs can be reviewed to the old (1992) code by default or updated to the 2005 edition. New wall panel designs will use the 2005 edition by default using the redesigned Masonry properties selection and input page shown below:

The new input page caters for thin joint mortar construction as well as the new mortar strength class equivalents to the former `designations'. It also supports the blocks `laid on the flat' option for which strength values are now given in table 2h of BS 5628-1:2005. The code values are automatically defaulted to the Characteristic strengths page following selection in Masonry properties.

Experienced masonry designers will note that the default unit mean compressive strength for blocks has been changed from 3.5 to 3.6 N/mm2. This seemingly trivial change is a result of aligning BS 5628:2005 with European standards for masonry units and testing. Blocks with standard mean strengths of 2.8, 3.5, 5.0, 7.0 and 10 N/mm2 when tested to the former BS 6073-1 apparently have mean compressive strengths of 2.9, 3.6, 5.2, 7.3, and 10.4 N/mm2 when tested to BS EN 1052-1.
